I promised my PCP that I'd see my NUT about my low protein so today I called her and we had a consult over the phone. The first thing she said was that I need my albumin number as that's a more accurate indication of my protein status. Told you!
Anyway, I'm going to make some tweaks to my diet. Less nuts -- apparently not only do they have very little protein but it's not very bioavailable -- and more eggs. Guess I have to stop being so lazy and make more hard-boiled eggs!
Plus there are some new recipes for egg bites I've been meaning to try, but just haven't had time.
I'm also going to drink a protein drink in the afternoon. Hopefully that will allow me to overcome my protein bar addiction. (I keep saying I don't want to eat so many protein bars but then I keep buying them!)
I'm going to do this for a few months and get retested. I'll keep you posted.

I just found you and haven't read all your post....YET....LOL Are protein bars not a good source of protein? I use the Pure Protein with 200 calories, 5 grams of fat, 2 grams of sugar loads of vitamins and 20 grams of protein per bar. Chewy Chocolate chip is my favorite.
I am still fat, but trying very hard to either make money selling my stuff or get a loan. My mind is made up - I want to have the VSG.
I kind of fell guilty, like I am taking the easy way out, but I can't lose the weight without extreme help.
Please let me know about the protein bars....also what kind of protein shakes do you drink?
I forgot to mention - I have the worst insurance in the world and they wont pay a penny towards any weight loss programs, let alone surgery.
But...they can send out a letter showing the risks of having heart disease if your parents had it. I think my risk is somewhere aroung 48%....but my employer doesn't care. They have an exclusion from surgery...even if you are morbidly obese.
I am trying to get a job somewhere else where the insurance does pay for surgery. Unless I can get that job, I will have to pay myself. I am divorced and my ex really burnt me a blister with my finances. I went through a credit management program to pay off all the debt he left on me. It took me 4 years and now I have a house payment which takes 2 weeks pay every month. It is hard, but I am a good manager. I just hope I can get the money this year, so I can be thinner when I get married next year to the love of my life.
Wow....didn't know I had so much to say.
Protein bars are complicated. They often have MORE carbs than protein! They report the sugar grams when they have a lot of sugar alcohols and it seems like a great deal -- until you look at the carbs.
Also, they don't all use the best sources of protein. But some do. And some have lower carbs than others.
So you have to read the labels very carefully.
But the big problem with them, for me, is that they are a trigger food. So instead of saving them for emergencies, I'll eat them instead of something more natural. Or I'll eat 3 a day.
They do kind of taste like candy and so I think a lot of people are triggered by them, not just me.
Another issue is that they are a slider food. That means you can eat more of them even post-op because your restriction doesn't kick in as fast. They aren't as much of a slider food as liquid calories, but, if I'm careful, I can eat a meal and then 20 min. later eat a bar.
Places I know of that pay for WLS:
-Starbucks
-Cisco
-Microsoft
That's just the ones I know about.
